ADOT IID

Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) IID Program

The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) IID Program is a state-run initiative designed to enhance road safety by addressing drivers who have been convicted of alcohol-related offenses, specifically driving under the influence (DUI). The program requires certain individuals convicted of DUI or other alcohol-related offenses to install an Ignition Interlock Device (IID) in their vehicles.

Key Details of the ADOT IID Program:

Ignition Interlock Device (IID):

  • An IID is a breathalyzer installed in a vehicle. Before starting the vehicle, the driver must blow into the device to test their blood alcohol concentration (BAC) through a breath sample frequently referred to as a “test”.
  • If the BAC is above the preset limit (The lock out limit in Arizona is 0.02% or higher), the vehicle will not start and depending on the frequency of the
  • The device also requires periodic retests while driving, ensuring the driver remains sober and no alcohol is present at the time of sample.

Who is Required to Participate?

  • Individuals who are convicted of DUI offenses or other alcohol-related driving violations in Arizona.
  • The requirement can apply to first-time offenders as well as repeat offenders, especially in cases of severe DUI, aggravated DUI, or second/third offenses.
  • Individuals may also be required to participate in the IID program if their driver's license is suspended or revoked due to a DUI conviction but they wish to regain limited driving privileges (such as to commute to work.)

Program Duration:

The duration of the IID requirement can vary depending on the offense:

  • For a first-time DUI offense, the IID requirement may last for 6 months.
  • For subsequent offenses, the requirement can be extended, sometimes lasting up to 24 months.
  • Drivers who fail to comply with the program (e.g., by tampering with or failing to use the IID properly) can face further penalties.

Cost:

The installation and maintenance of the IID are at the driver's expense. The cost includes installation, monthly rental, and other fees. We are the most cost-effective solution to reinstating your driving privilege in Arizona, while other service centers mislead clients with deceptive pricing, we are direct. We have been serving our community for over 15 years and are proud to help our clients reinstate their driving privilege in the most cost-effective way possible.

IID Program Process:

  • Upon conviction, the court or the ADOT will notify the individual if they are required to install an IID.
  • The driver must then get the IID installed at a certified provider, preferably for the client, a provider with dedicated service centers, like Arizona Interlocks.
  • Once installed, the device must be monitored periodically, and the driver must comply with all regulations, such as ensuring the device is not tampered with or circumvented.
  • The driver must submit to regular checks and provide proof of participation to the ADOT or the court.

Purpose and Goals:

  • The program aims to reduce the number of alcohol-impaired drivers on the road.
  • It serves as a deterrent for future offenses and ensures that individuals who are not sober cannot drive, thus reducing accidents caused by drunk driving.
  • It also provides a way for individuals to regain their driving privileges in a controlled, monitored way.

Alcohol Education and Treatment:

  • In some cases, individuals may be required to participate in alcohol education or treatment programs as part of the IID program or as a condition of their sentence. We can assist you in finding a screening program near you
  • Some individuals may also be required to take a Traffic survival school class. We can assist you in finding a TSS program near you.

In Summary

Arizona’s IID program is part of the state's efforts to reduce drunk driving and enhance road safety by ensuring that drivers convicted of DUI offenses cannot operate a vehicle under the influence of alcohol. The program combines monitoring, education, and accountability, helping to deter future violations and promote responsible driving behavior. Arizona Interlocks will help you install an ignition interlock near you. Some of our clients will travel great distances in the state to not deal with other service centers who are not dedicated DUI Ignition interlock service centers.
